As any decorator will tell you, curtains make a room—but only when chosen correctly. Do you have one really long window, or a group of windows side by side, such as sliding or French doors? Wide windows can keep a room bright and showcase a gorgeous view, but they can also make you feel overwhelmed when you think about dressing them. When it comes to window treatments, it’s a matter of color and fabric, length and lining, and custom-made versus off-the-shelf.

Things to Note

What is your goal?

Do you need the treatments to be functional, decorative, or both?

What is your budget?

There are window treatment options that can showcase your windows, that could flow well with the look of your room, and that will not break the budget. Treating windows grouped together or individually can add or take away to the total cost.

Do I need privacy at the window?

While privacy is a top concern for someone living in a city, it is often not a concern at all for folks living on several acres of land in the country.

What level of sun control do I need at this window?

If you have direct sunlight hitting you in the face while you eat dinner, you need more sun control than you may need on a north-facing window of a rarely-used guest room.

Do I have small children or pets in my home?

If so, choosing something with child and pet safety in mind is wise.

Do I have specialty windows that need to be covered?

Windows in unusual shapes like arches, triangles and trapezoids can be covered – but not every product will work on every window shape. With so many decisions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

Design Language

Contemporary & Straight Line

The contemporary style is characterised by clean, no-fuss lines. It is all about creating a tailored, structured look that is the antithesis of the more flouncy and elaborate vintage style. This line is extremely flexible, easily adaptable to almost any space. Whether big or small, formal or casual – this modern look can be tailored to suit any requirement.

Although a minimalist look, it is far from boring. The contemporary style lays emphasis on cutting-edge design and high quality material. When it comes to contemporary window treatments, you can play with a number of elements to create an unforgettable effect.

There are many factors which play essential role in creating a contemporary look.

Getting that Contemporary Look

Stitching

It is important that the stitching is neat and tailored with clean, straight lines. This style may lack the drama of a vintage curtain, but it must never be untidy or messy. The common pleats used here are simple eyelets, tab tops, pencil pleats, French pleats, rod pockets and more

Prints

We have worked hard in amassing contemporary prints that pouch the envelope. Choose from geometric prints, floral designs, embossed patterns and more.

Accessories

Do not forget the add ons that complete the look! We work with cornices boxes, tailored valences and innovative tie-backs.

Neo Classical

Taking its inspiration from the Greek and Roman empires of the eighteenth century, the neo-classical look is lavish and elegant. The clean, graceful lines of this style falls somewhere between straight lines of the contemporary style and drama of the vintage style. It can be adapted to different spaces and offers more flexibility in fabric than the more vintage style.

The neo-classical style is ideal for

Hotels

Reception Lobbies

Block Printing

Marriage Halls

Homes With Greek-Roman Style Decor

Elements in a Neo-classical curtain

Valences

These curtain designs echo the beautiful fall and flounce with valences. These should be carefully tailored, such as in scalloped and Victorian valences.

Swags and Festoons

Like the classic design, the neo-classical look also relies heavily on swags and festoons. These hanging fabrics can be fringed or tasseled for an elaborate look. Festoons with trailing ribbons and fabrics are a classic Greco-Roman style. These fringed, braided festoons work perfectly as tiebacks.

Material

We house wide choices in neo-classical fabrics. These are typically luxurious fabrics with a distinct sensual touch. You can choose from damasks, brocades, velvet and silk. You can also opt from our range of blended fabrics.

The Classic Style

For those with a more traditional bend, the evergreen classical style works perfectly. Suitable for large spaces, big windows, old and refurbished homes, the period style can be worked to create drama and impact.

The classic style is ideal for those who like a luxurious, glamorous and opulent look. The vintage style is heavy on accessories and elaborate stitching patterns. This makes it perfect as window treatments for large windows.

Essential Elements in the Classic Style

The Fall

The classic style is extremely particular about the stitching style. The pleats must be tailored, neat and if possible, elaborate. Our curtains can be stitched with French pleats, box pleats, pinch pleats or pencil pleats to ensure that the fall remains impeccable.

Length

Vintage Window Curtains are almost always long. These can just stop short touching the floor or create a flounce at the bottom.

Material

Period curtains should ideally be made of heavy material. We offer a wide choice in vintage materials like silk, velvet, chenille and other blended material. Some prints are also characteristic of this style.

Add-ons

The elaborate vintage style thrives on touches like flounces, fringes and tassels. These can also cleverly hide certain Stitching flaws like covering linings or ensuring a better fall.

Accessories

We provide cornice boxes, valences, swags and jabots. Other accessories that can be essential for this look are tiebacks. Again, these can be fringed, tasselled and more.

Country Chic

If you are planning a look that is casual and stylish at the same time, the country chic look is just right for you. It is smart, casual and hip. If you are not one for formal and stiff house decorating ideas, you may want to give this style a chance.

This style is very adaptable, easily fitting into less formal areas like the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Charming, unstructured and highly individualistic, the country choice look lets you incorporate the old with new, the latest trend with heirloom.

This style may look haphazard and unstructured; in actuality it must be planned and executed with precision. At DBR Furnishings, we can create this charming look, while taking into account our clients’ very specific tastes and preferences. Our wide range of Window Treatment styles makes it quite easy to pick up the right elements for this style.

Getting that Country Chic Look

Prints

The country chic style works with some classic prints, like checks, stripes and florals. Inspired by the rustic living and the green countryside, our prints can be carefully customized according to choice.

Material

This is not a style that asks for luxurious fabrics like silk or velvet. However, we offer a premier range of linen curtains. For a more chic look, we also house lace and sheer curtains.

Ruffles

Use them on valences, curtain edges or on swags. We offer stitching solutions for an exclusive customized look. Our carefully sourced stock offers swags that are fashionably shabby.

How to Measure

Curtain making is a skill or rather, a fine art…

Planning is the beginning the first step to perfect window dressings. Initially, One needs to consider fabric choice, finalize the stitching pattern, ensure installation and decorative details.

A beautifully appointed window treatment can transform a boring window into a dramatic show stopper.

Style is a principle consideration achieved by subtle balance between fashion, personal taste and practicality. Curtains come in a variety of headers and offer various levels of light control.

Nowadays, Windows are the new stars of the home – they can be dressed to frill or to thrill, or kept simple and chic.

Here is a guide to help you decide which style will achieve the look and functionality you desire at your windows

Styles of Curtains

French Pleat curtain

The French pleat is a classic drapery heading also known as the three-finger pleat. it creates a sleek header for a curtain that controls fullness while allowing the curtain full functionality. The fullness is adjustable, depending on decor style, fabric choice, and functional requirements of the curtain.

Box Pleat curtain

A box pleat is one of the most common types of pleats. It is formed when two equal folds of fabric are folded away from each other in opposite directions on the front of a length of fabric. The folds traditionally meet evenly at the center back, but they don’t have to meet at the center. You can create a single box pleat or a grouping of box pleats, depending on the overall visual design. In addition, you can topstitch or edge stitch a pleat to help maintain its form.

Pencil Pleat curtain

Pencil Pleat curtain have a soft, informal look making them a popular choice for bedroom or cottage interiors. Pencil pleat curtains work equally well on poles or tracks and by setting the heading tape down slightly 5cm an attractive ‘ruffle’ can be created at the top of the curtain.

Goblet Curtain

The top of the curtain is with a row of goblet-shaped design at regular intervals, thus the name. Especially suitable for curtains with long drop and it is a modern version of an old classic pinch pleat the difference is basically a rounded shape at the top where the buckram(stiffener)is located to create the heading of the drape. It is luxurious and formal, thus a nice option for grand buildings

Rod Pocket Curtain

Rod pocket Curtain is also called as tailored or pole top curtains, for its tailored straight look. It is the most basic curtain style with a sewn-in rod pocket at the top of each curtain panel. Rod pocket curtains work well layered under a valance, or with a sheer or shade underneath. . Flat rod pocket is a curtain treatment with a 3” rod pocket with ruffles. It is stationary, nonmoving curtain style. Very decorative in appearance, this style looks even prettier, if slashed on the sides with creative tiebacks.

Eyelet top curtain

Eyelet curtains have metal-edged holes all the top. The circular holes in the header allow the drapes to be smoothly opened and closed, eyelet curtains offer a contemporary alternative to traditional pencil pleating. The curtains are often floor length with soft pleats running vertically down the fabric. An eyelet curtain panel may be made of heavy or lightweight fabric and may be lined with thin material.

Ripple fold curtain

Ripple curtains are the newest trend in window decoration. Ripple-fold drapes have identical soft, vertical folds with clean lines that suit contemporary and minimalist decor. The folds are achieved by sewing a tape containing evenly spaced snaps along the top of the drapery panel, then fitting the snaps into matching hangers on special hardware, which needs to be ordered separately.

  • Measure A
  • Measure B This would normally be around 20cm (8 inches)
  • Now add A + B + B = C

Measure for Curtains Drop/Length

Before we can measure for curtains length, we need to decide whether our curtains will fall to the sill, below the sill or to the floor. Sill length curtains usually finish 1/2 inch (1.25cm) above the sill. Curtains that fall below the sill usually finish 15cm (6 inches) below. This, of course, can be adjusted for personal preference. For floor length curtains you should allow 1 inch (2.5cm) clearance to avoid dragging.

Now, with your track/pole fitted 6-8 inches (15-20cm) above the window recess, for exact hook drop measure it from the runner of the track/ring till your chosen finished length.

Note: For Eyelet curtains, measure the length from top of the rod till your chosen finished length.

Suggestion: Please show a rod and track with the runner/ring for exact hook drop.

Roman Blind

Roman blinds are great options for those seeking privacy, yet practicality. Moreover, they also help give the window and the room a refreshingly new look. With the wide varieties of stitching options, there are enough options to suit all kinds of fashion trend. A Roman Blind offers a clean tidy look and can be positioned either inside or outside the window frame/opening allowing the blind to be raised above the window thus not restricting the view.

Roman Blinds can be lined the same way as a curtain is lined, to give complete block out or using polyester cotton lining that is translucent but provides the base curtain fabric protection from the sun.

A Roman blind is the perfect solution where you do not have any stack room for a curtain but still desire a curtain design or wish to match existing curtains.

Styles of Blinds

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are made from fabric that is designed to pleat when raised. The blinds are constructed by mounting slats, which are connected to cords, into the back of a fabric panel. When the blind is lifted, the cords pull the slats together and force the blind to fold into pleats.

Different types of fabric can be used for Roman blinds, from silk and linen to cotton and synthetics. They are a great alternative to curtains, as there’s a huge variety of colours, patterns and textiles is available.

Roman blinds allow for easy and effective light control. They can be adjusted depending on the time of day or season, and blackout options are available if total darkness is required. By choosing thermal lining, they can also be made more energy efficient.

This type of blind can be fitted either outside or within the recess. We recommend opting for outside, as it allows for increased light and is very easy to fit. Plus, bounce-back won’t be an issue, and the fabric is less likely to fade in the sunlight.

Roman blinds are easy to use and they look fantastic. Plus, there’s something to suit all budgets; affordability depends upon the type of fabric and size, as well as the choice of headrails

Roller Blinds

A Roller blind is a single piece of fabric which wraps around a casing and fits into the top of your window frame, either within or outside of your window recess. The Roller blind is operated by a pull cord attached to the bottom of the blind or by a side-winding chain mechanism attached to the blind casing. Motorised controls are also available giving you the option to open and close your blinds remotely.

Panel Blinds

Panel blinds are a modern variation of vertical blinds that use wide fabric panels that slide across a multichannel track. The fabric panels have a weighted bottom bar, to maintain their smooth appearance. Panel blinds are ideal for larger windows, patio doors or even as room dividers and provide complete control over your privacy and light that enters the room. When fully closed, these blinds can stack behind one another, allowing for maximum light to enter your room.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are one of the most popular types of blind available for contemporary homes, even though they have a long history of use in home and commercial premises of all styles. There’s something distinctive about Venetian window blinds that continues to make them both a popular choice and an attractive one.

The structure of Venetian blinds is a simple one: they are horizontal slats made from either wood or metal and suspended on ladder cords. They can be easily adjusted to let in more or less light, and they’re easy to raise and lower. Beyond that, what else do you need to know about Venetian blinds?

Benefits of Venetian blinds

So, Venetian blinds are popular in kitchens, bathrooms and offices amongst other locations, but what are the benefits that keep homeowners and business owners returning to these tried and tested blinds?

– Suitable for any size of window
– Easy to operate
– Easy to clean
– Allow privacy and light control
– Affordable option
– Available in a variety of finishes to provide customer choice
– Can be made to measure

It’s important to remember, though, that while Venetian window blinds, there are some households that might prefer other types of window covering. For example, small children and the cords of Venetian blinds often don’t mix, and lightweight slats can be easy to damage which will then have a knock-on effect on the attractiveness of the window as a whole.

Zebra Blinds

Zebra blinds combine sheer sunscreen and solid weave fabric. When the solid fabric strips overlap, sunlight is blocked out; when the sheer fabric strips overlap, light is let in. From a sunlit room to a darker, more private space, these shades can transition from open to closed in seconds. They operate in the same manner as roller blinds and come in motorized or non-motorized.

One of the biggest reasons behind their popularity is their simple design. They’re streamlined, provide clean visuals and complement the shape of any window. They’re also easy to operate, maintain, come in a range of fabrics, and don’t take up much space. Available in a range of rich colours, zebra blinds are one of the biggest home improvement products in 2020.

Benefits of Zebra Blinds

  • Light Control

Their sleek design and light-control ability make zebra blinds ideal for any room. Pull down the blinds when you need some privacy or leave them open when you want more sunlight. You can also raise them into their valance for a view outside with no obstructions from the window.

  • Versatile Design

Zebra blinds are versatile enough to fit into any interior decor. While their clean lines and minimalistic look work perfectly in contemporary settings, their soft sheer fabric complements traditional and antique decor.

  • Fabric Options

Zebra blinds come in a wide variety of fabric, design and colour options. Depending on your taste you can either go bold with bright hues or simply keep it neutral. Available in both light-filtering and room-darkening fabrics, you can easily coordinate your zebra blinds with other room furnishings, including drapery and upholstery.

  • Motorization

Do you often leave your windows either open or closed all day long because they’re too hard to reach or it’s a hassle to operate them manually? Motorized zebra blinds can be programmed to operate according to your needs. Simply schedule the time on your app and let the motor do its job. Aside from saving you the time and trouble of operating your window coverings manually, they also add value to your home.

  • Interior Protection

Your home deserves the best care to make sure it looks great for years to come. But constant exposure to sunlight can cause your furniture and flooring to discolour and fade. It can also cause similar damage to carpets, upholstery, photographs, wallpaper, and artwork such as paintings. When closed, layered zebra blinds can block out 99% of UV rays and protect your interiors against harsh sunlight.

  • Privacy

If you’re concerned about prying eyes, zebra blinds solve that problem. Thanks to the black-and-white sheer layers, you can enjoy looking outside during the day while outsiders can’t see in. This is in contrast to shutter louvers or horizontal blinds which require you to close them if you want daytime privacy.

  • Child Safety
Corded window treatments pose a suffocation hazard for pets and children. Motorized roller zebra blinds are cordless, which means there are no dangerous wires or loops. This makes them perfect for nurseries, kids’ rooms, playrooms and even classrooms
Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds are vertical lengths of fabric that are clipped to a sliding track at the top and operated with a plastic wand or chain. These pieces of fabric (also known as louvres or slats) are joined together by weights to ensure the louvres are evenly weighted across the length of the track, no matter if they’re fully extended across the track or nestled together to let extra light inside. The louvres are also joined together by a chain at the bottom which works to stabilise the blinds. Vertical blinds are very versatile and robust, they can suit most rooms within your home. From the living and dining room to the kitchen and conservatories – the options are endless.

Romex Blinds

Rimini’s Romex Blinds are manufactured in the same conventional style as a Roman Blind, however made with Roller Blind fabrics instead. They are a perfect option for people who like trying different décor styles for their home. Romex Blinds are a new stitch-less addition to the window covering family and are an excellent and contemporary alternative to soft romans and curtain

Relax Blind

Relax Blind hangs Straight and falls into soft Pleats as it is raised. A no stich, relaxed and drowsy look gives a very shabby chic and casual look to window. The main structure of the blinds is kept intact, but there are no rods, hems or stiches in to be seen. This is a perfect look if one wants to create a casual setting.

Measure for Blinds Drop/Length

  • Measure A
  • Measure B This would normally be around 20cm (8 inches)
  • Now add A + B + B = C
